Data Center Operator Hit With Patent Suit Over Bitcoin Mining

Data-center company Core Scientific Inc.'s Bitcoin-mining activities infringe cryptography patents originally obtained by Blackberry Ltd., Malikie Innovations Ltd. alleged in a lawsuit.

Core Scientific has engaged in Bitcoin mining since emerging from bankruptcy in January 2024, Ireland-based Malikie and its trust beneficiary Key Patent Innovations Ltd. said in a complaint filed Monday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Core Scientific refused to engage in licensing talks, according to the complaint, saying demand letters send by Malikie violated bankruptcy orders.
