Supreme Court Takes Down Its YouTube Channel After Hackers Promote Crypto Content On Platform

The Supreme Court of India's official YouTube channel was hacked on Friday, September 20, in a potential security breach.

After the official YouTube channel of the Supreme Court of India was hacked in a potential security breach on Friday, the court authorities decided to take down the channel and resume it after claiming full administrative control over the same.

In an official statement, the top court said, “This is to inform all concerned that the YouTube channel of the Supreme Court of India has been taken down. The services on the YouTube channel of the Supreme Court of India will be resumed shortly."

    The hackers showcased unauthorised content related to cryptocurrency instead of court proceedings. They posted videos promoting XRP, a cryptocurrency developed by US-based Ripple Labs.

    The social media platform, crucial for the judiciary, is generally used for live streaming of significant cases before the Constitution Benches and other matters of public interest.

    The viewers searching for recordings of the hearings found that all previous videos have been set private and replaced by a live video titled ‘Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds To The SEC’s $2 Billion Fine! XRP PRICE PREDICTION.’

    The top court was scheduled to hear several priority cases including a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a fixed time limit for the Centre to notify the appointment of judges recommended by the SC Collegium.

    The court was preparing for the hearing of a plea from the Muslim side contesting an Allahabad high court order, which rejected their challenge on the maintainability of cases filed by Hindu parties related to the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute.
