RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Washoe County Sheriff’s Office says that cyber scams double during the holiday months, and right now there is a concerning scam occurring.

Scammers are calling people and asking them to pay a warrant charge to the sheriff’s office. The phone number is cloned to look like the correct WCSO phone number, but it isn’t.

WCSO Detective Richard Spaulding says there are some red flags to look out for to know if it is a scam.

Firstly, WCSO won’t call you to handle warrant charges, and they won’t ask you to stay on the phone for any bank withdrawals.

They will never ask you to use cryptocurrency to pay these warrants off and will not ask you to drop off the money in person.

If you receive a call like this, you’re asked to report it to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
